Note:
The content in this article pertains to retired products, ArcView GIS versions 3.x. Later versions of ArcGIS may contain different functionality, as well as different names and locations for menus, commands and geoprocessing tools.

Cause

ArcView is using an empty marker palette.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Search the hard drive for the default.avp file.
Note:
At least one should be located in the \esri\av_gis30\arcview\symbols directory. Additional copies of default.avp may be found in the home directory or in the Windows\Temp directory.
  1. Rename any additional copies to default.old, or just delete them.
Warning:
Make sure to not delete or rename the default.avp file located in \esri\av_gis30\arcview\symbols.
  1. Open the Palette Manager.
  2. Click the markers.
If the markers are still missing, in the Palette Manager do the following:
  1. Select type Marker.
  2. Click the Clear button.
  3. Go back to the Marker Palette.
  4. Make sure the Marker Palette is still clear.
  5. Go back to the Palette Manager.
  6. Set Type=Marker.
  7. Click the Reset button.
