When opening a project, the status bar hangs at x% and appears to freeze.
Quite possibly, the project contains a large icon or bitmap marker.
Imported icons are stored as hexadecimal data in the project file itself. Although an icon is only one object, it could actually be a very large portion of the project file. ArcView would take a long time to read that one object; thus, the status bar will appear to hang, when in fact the computer is still processing the project data.
Once an icon has been imported into an ArcView Project, it can not be removed. You should take preventative measures.
Keep your icons small. Anything under 30 pixels by 30 pixels should work just fine. Optimally, icons should be 16 pixels by 16 pixels.
A common mistake is to make bitmap icons in Paintbrush and forget to first resize the page from the default (8-1/2" x 11") to a smaller size (16 pixels by 16 pixels). If you save the BMP with the large default dimensions, the file size will be very large. If you import such BMP into ArcView as an icon, the project-hang problem will occur.
If your project loads slowly, and you are sure it does not contain large icons, please contact Technical Support.
