How To: Change the size and style of the font in the Table of Contents using Avenue

Summary

Note:
The information in this article applies to ArcView GIS versions 3.x only. The instructions described apply to the Avenue programming language, which is specific to the ArcView GIS application.

The size and style of the font in the Table of Contents can be changed  by using the following Avenue script.

Procedure

  • Change default setting
    Modify the startup file stored in the $AVHOME\etc folder so ArcView  loads the specified size and style of font each time ArcView is started.
  1. Copy the Avenue code.
s = TextSymbol.Make
s.SetFont(Font.Make("Courier New","Bold"))
s.SetSize(8.5)
TOC.SetDefaultSymbol(s)
  1. Open the $AVHOME\etc\startup file in a text editor such as NotePad or WordPad.
  2. Paste the Avenue code at the end of the startup file.
  3. Save the startup file.
  4. Restart ArcView.
Note:
The font name, style, and size can be changed by replacing the existing values in the Avenue script with the values that you would like to display in the Table of Contents.
  • Project specific
    Load and run a script so ArcView can load the specified size and style of font for that project only.
  1. Copy the Avenue code.
s = TextSymbol.Make
s.SetFont(Font.Make("Garamond","Italic"))
s.SetSize(16)
TOC.SetDefaultSymbol(s)
  1. Open a script window.
  2. Paste the Avenue code into the script window.
  3. Select Compile from the Script menu.
  4. Select Run from the Script menu.
Note:
The font name, style, and size can be changed by replacing the existing values in the Avenue script with the values that you would like to display in the Table of Contents.
