Measurements between layouts and views are vastly different

Description

Measurements taken in the view don't match the measurements taken in the layout based on the scale bar.

Cause

There are two scenarios which may cause this problem.

  • The view contains data in a projected coordinate system, but the view's map units are set incorrectly. For example, the data projection uses feet but the view is set to meters.
  • The view contains data in the geographic coordinate system and the view's map units are correctly set to decimal degrees, but the view doesn't have a projection defined.

Solution or Workaround

Change the view properties map units or projection to the appropriate setting:
