Create a multiple layer marker symbol

Summary

It is possible to create and save multiple layer marker symbols using the style manager dialog to access the symbol property editor.

Procedure

For example, to create a multiple layer tree marker symbol:

  1. Select Tools > Styles > Style Manager.
  2. Select a style to receive the symbol and open the Marker Symbols folder.
  3. Right-click in the symbol viewing area and select New > Marker Symbol.
  4. Change the marker type to Character Marker Symbol.
  5. Select the ESRI US MUTCD 3 font. Set the Index to 242, the X Offset to 0.5 and the Size to 18.

  6. Press the Add layer button.

  7. Select the ESRI MUTCD 3 font. Set the Index to 241, the Size to 18, and the color to CMYK 65 0 43 35.
    To select a custom color, click More Colors... on the bottom of the color palette. This will open the Color Selector.

    Use the right arrow at the top of the Color Selector menu to change the color model.

  8. Click the Add layer button.
  9. Select the ESRI MUTCD 3 font. Set the Index to 240, the Size to 18, and the color to CMYK 0 31 49 38.
    Your symbol will now look like this:

  10. At the Symbol Property Editor, click OK.
  11. Change the symbol name and category.
