Interactively select from overlapping features in ArcMap

Summary

This article shows two strategies for interactively selecting from overlapping features.

Procedure

• If the overlapping features are in different layers, change your ArcMap selection environment to allow selection from only one of the layers. Change this setting in ArcMap by going to the Selection menu > Set Selectable Layers.
  
  
• If the overlapping features are in the same layer, and you are editing, open the Editor's Attribute Inspector and unselect extraneous features.
