Imported .mif is reversed 180 degrees

Description

When importing a .mif file, it comes in reversed 180 degrees.

Cause

MapInfo creates a file that does not contain Cartesian coordinates. The .mif file contains coordinates that ArcView interprets as being in the Eastern Hemisphere, so when the file is imported into ArcView, the Y coordinate is correct but the X coordinate is wrong. The coverage flips 180 degrees along the North/South axis.

Solution or Workaround

• Option 1: In MapInfo, create the .mif file with negative values for X coordinates.
• Option 2: If you don't have MapInfo, open the .mif file in a text editor, such as WordPad or Notepad, and add a negative sign to every X coordinate.
• Option 3: If the number of records is too large to apply option 2, open a spreadsheet and enter all the X coordinates. Multiply the column by negative one (-1). Save the new values to a text file and copy the proper coordinates into the .mif file.
