Apply different patch shapes to an ArcMap legend

Summary

Steps to edit the properties of an existing legend to use different patch shapes for different layers.

Procedure

1. Double-click the legend to open the Legend Properties dialog box.
2. Select the Items tab.
3. Right-click on the layer in the Legend Items list and choose Properties from the context menu.
4. Select the General tab.
5. Check the box to Override default patch.
   
   
   
6. Select a patch shape from the drop-down list for Line or Area patches as appropriate.
