Legend columns get updated even if cancelling out of the dialog box

Description

After checking the 'Place in new column' box, and/or editing the number of columns for a legend item, on the Items tab of ArcMap's Legend Properties dialog box, changes are still applied to the legend when clicking Cancel . The changes are apparent as soon as the legend is refreshed or moved.

Cause

Changes to the legend item column settings are applied as soon as they are made, and clicking Cancel does not discard the changes.

Solution or Workaround

1. Double-click the legend to open the Legend Properties dialog box
2. Click the Items tab.
   
   
   
   
3. Select the legend item in the Legend Items list whose column settings you previously modified.
4. Reset the column settings by checking or unchecking the 'Place in new column' box, and/or editing the number of columns.
