Bad field encountered in DTxt virtual table (vtab)

Error Message

This error occurs when trying to add a delimited text file as an ArcView table:

Bad field encountered in DTxt virtual table (vtab)

Cause

The number of delimited field names in the first line of the text file doesn't match the number of delimited values in the subsequent lines.

Solution or Workaround

1. Open the text file in an ASCII text editor.
   
   
2. Ensure that the number of delimited field names on the first line matches the number of delimited values on all the subsequent lines.
   
   Count the number of delimiters in each line, they should be the same through out the file. If you encounter a line or set of lines with a different number of delimiters, add or subtract delimiters to these lines as needed.
   
   
3. If you have Excel, import the text file and then save it as a DBF. You should be able to easily add this DBF file to ArcView.
