Frequently asked question

Is any additional software required to make an OLE DB connection in ArcCatalog and ArcMap?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

For many users, the OLE DB functionality provided by Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), which is included as part of the ARC 8 desktop installation, is all that will be required. The MDAC pack, version 2.5, includes Microsoft SQL Server, Jet 3.51 and 4.0 OLE DB providers, an OLE DB provider for ODBC Drivers (for ODBC connections), and Microsoft's own OLE DB Provider for Oracle.

If you wish to use the Oracle OLE DB provider, these are are required on the local machine: Oracle Client Software Support File version 7.3.3.4.0 or later, and SQL*Net version 2.3.3.0.4. You must also set up an appropriate SQL*Net alias name for your Oracle database instance. For more information on configuring Oracle clients, please refer to your Oracle documentation.

Other users may wish to use native OLE DB providers in their applications. Please refer to the network client requirements for your particular choice of database or application.
