Can't edit shapefiles that were converted from CAD themes

Description

The Start Editing option is grayed out for a theme that was created by converting a CAD theme to a shapefile.

Cause

Two possible causes:

1. The shapefile stores 3D features.
2. The original CAD file had blocked entities.

Solution or Workaround

• Convert the 3D feature theme into a 2D feature theme using the xyz2xy.ave sample script located in ..\Av_gis30\ArcView\Samples\Scripts.
• Explode the CAD file using the file's native CAD application.

  ArcView cannot edit 3D feature themes unless the 3D Analyst extension is loaded.
