Assertion - Bit in range failed in line 268 ...\base\bitmap.c

Error Message

When accessing a shapefile, ArcView returns the error:

"Assertion - Bit in range failed in line 268 ...\base\bitmap.c"

Cause

Shapefile's spatial index is corrupt

Solution or Workaround

1. Make a backup copy of the shapefile. You can do this from Windows Explorer or from a Command Prompt window.
2. Delete or rename the .sbn and .sbx file associated with the shapefile.
3. Re-add the theme to the view.
