HOW TO

Register a paper map in ArcMap

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

List of steps to register a paper map for digitizing.

Procedure

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Add the layer you are interested in registering. You will need at least
four known locations or control points. These can be represented as
    points in your layer.
  3. Get the XY locations of your control points, write them down on a piece
of paper and set it aside.
  4. On the EDITOR toolbar, click START EDITING.
  5. On the EDITOR toolbar, click OPTIONS
  6. Click the Digitizer tab.
  7. After your paper map is securely taped to your digitizer, use your digitizing puck to click on the four control points. If you have chosen specific IDs for the control points, it is easiest to register the control points starting with the lowest ID and ending with the highest ID. After the points are added, you can modify the ID so it has the desired value.
  8. Now, you will need to type in the actual ground coordinates (from step 3). Be sure that the correct xy location is entered next to the correct point that was registered on the digitizer.
  9. Check the ENABLED check box.
  10. The digitizer puck will be registered with the data only when using the sketch tools.
