Installing the Service Pack
Installation Notes
It is important to keep the all versions of ArcGIS products installed on
a machine in sync to avoid any software conflicts.
To find out what products are currently installed on your machine, download
the ServicePackFinder91.exe utility
and run it from your local machine. This utility provides a report detailing
which ArcGIS products are currently installed on your machine. This will help
determine which product Service Packs you should install on your machine.
The report also details which service packs have been installed. The report
is displayed when the utility is run and a servicepack.txt log file is created
in your temp folder. The Service Pack Finder utility searches for the following
ArcGIS products.
ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) Includes the ArcReader
fixes for the ArcReader FEATURE.
ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit
ArcGIS Engine Runtime
ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit
ArcGIS Server
ArcGIS Server .NET ADF
ArcGIS Server Java ADF
ArcGIS Tutorial Data
ArcReader standalone
ArcIMS
ArcSDE
NOTE (ArcIMS and ArcSDE users): If you use ArcIMS 9.1 or ArcSDE 9.1, you must also install ArcIMS 9.1 Service Pack 1 or ArcSDE 9.1 Service Pack 1. For example, if you use ArcIMS 9.1 and ArcGIS 9.1 Desktop, install both ArcIMS 9.1 Service Pack 1 and ArcGIS 9.1 Desktop Service Pack 1. Since ArcIMS 9.1, ArcSDE 9.1 and the ArcGIS 9.1 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.
NOTE (ArcGIS Server users): If you have ArcGIS Server 9.1 and any other ArcGIS product installed on your machine, we recommend that you install the ArcGIS 9.1 Server Service Pack before installing the remaining Service Packs. Since ArcGIS Server and the ArcGIS 9.1 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.
NOTE (ArcView 9.1 Evaluation Edition users): This Service Pack is supported with the ArcView 9.1 Evaluation Edition.
NOTE (ArcGIS Server, Engine and Reader users on UNIX): This Service
Pack is only available on Windows; it is not available on the Sun or Linux
platform. Please note that the Windows 9.1 SP1 clients are fully compatible
with the Sun and Linux 9.1 servers for these products. Also, the 9.1 Sun
and Linux clients are compatible with the 9.1 SP 1 Windows servers.
If you are using ArcSDE data sources, you must apply the ArcSDE
9.1 SP 1 client install for your particular platform. Since the ArcGIS
9.1 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release
versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.
Installation Steps
ArcGIS 9.1 must be installed before you can install this Service Pack. This Service Pack is cumulative and contains all fixes from the pervious patches. If you already have a previous patch installed, you may apply this Service Pack over it to update the required files.
- Make sure you have write access to your ArcGIS installation location,
and that no one is accessing it.
- Download the appropriate files to a location other than the installation
folder:
ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView) ArcGISDesktop91sp1.msp 62 MB ArcGIS Engine Runtime ArcGISEngine91sp1.msp 33 MB ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit ArcGISEngineDevKit91sp1.msp 33 MB ArcReader ArcGISArcReader91sp1.msp 13 MB ArcGIS Server ArcGISServer91sp1.msp 32 MB ArcView 9.1 Evaluation Edition ArcViewDemo91sp1.msp 62 MB
- Double-click the msp files to start the install process.
NOTE: If double clicking on the MSP file does not start the Service Pack installation, you can start the Service Pack installation manually by using the following command:
msiexec.exe /p [location of service pack]\<Product>91sp1.msp REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus
- When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.
- Repeat steps 2 - 4 for each product installed on your machine.
- (Server Installation Only) After the Service Pack has successfully
been installed, you must run the ArcGIS Server Post Installation for the
updates to take effect.
- The Post Installation is available from Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Server > ArcGIS Server Post Installation.
- Log out of and back into your Windows session to activate the new security settings.
- This Service Pack must be installed on the Server Object Manager and all Server Object Container machines in your ArcGIS Server configuration. You must first install the Service Pack on each remote Server Object Container machine, then install the patch on the Server Object Manager machine. If a Server Object Container and a Server Object Manager exist on the same machine you only need to install the Service Pack and run the post install once on that machine.
To Install:
NOTE: If you have installed client setups from a shared Network Administrative
ArcGIS Desktop setup, this Service Pack must be applied to all client installations.
NOTE: You will not be able to install this Service Pack directly from
any removable media, you must copy the Service Pack Install file (MSP) locally
or to a location on your network prior to installing the Service Pack.
System Administrators note:
A technical paper is available to provide information on deploying ArcGIS
and Service Packs. This white paper discusses the deployment of ArcGIS 9.1
setups and Service Packs using Microsoft® Systems Management Server (SMS)
and Group Policy, including additional system requirements, suggestions, known
issues, and Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) command line parameters.
Deployment in a lockdown environment is also covered.
