Bug ENH-000096944

Synopsis

Provide clarification on “View metadata” documentation regarding difference between "Enable Metadata" and "Create Metadata"

Additional Information

N/A

Alternate Solution

A. Provide the appropriate/comparable step by step workflow to help illustrate the request.
Currently, the Portal/AGOL documentation page “View medadata” section describes who can see the Metadata button in item details page. It says,
"If an organization has enabled metadata, a Metadata button appears on their item details pages for item owners. Item owners use the button to access a built-in editor and include metadata. When an item includes metadata, anyone with access to the item also sees a Metadata button and can use it to view the metadata in the metadata style configured by the organization. Once the item owner has added metadata to the item, the owner sees a choice to View or Edit from within theMetadata button."

So based on documentation, in order to see Metadata, we need:

  1. Enable metadata by Portal Admin
  2. Then the item owner will see the Metadata button, and he can include the metadata.
  3. When an item includes metadata, anyone with access to the item also see a Metadata button
Here we need some clarification on difference between "Enable Metadata" and "Include/Create Metadata". Most of time, user assume it creates metadata when they enable the metadata in their organization, then everyone who has access to the item can see the Metadata Button. But in fact, Enabling Metadata doesn't mean we are creating Metadata. The owner needs to edit the metadata to include something before anyone with access can see Metadata button.
So, more explanation on difference between "Enable Metadata" and "Create Metadata" would be much appreciated.
