Bug: Unable to sign in to ArcGIS Online from ArcMap using Google credentials

Description

When signing in to ArcGIS Online from ArcMap using Google credentials, the following errors are encountered:

“An error has occurred in the script on this page"
and
"Google couldn't sign you in”.

This is logged as BUG-000127774.

Note:
This issue also affects ArcGIS Pro, and a workaround for that product is found in the article "Bug: Unable to sign in to ArcGIS Online from ArcGIS Pro using Google credentials"

Cause

The issue occurs because a script on the Google sign-in web page is incompatible with the Internet Explorer version used for the embedded browser dialog in ArcMap.

Workaround

Adjust the Internet Explorer version of the web browser using a registry key.

Warning:
The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type regedit in the Open box and click OK.
  3. Browse to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION
  1. Add a new DWORD (32-bit) Value for each of the following executable files:
    • ArcMap.exe
    • ArcCatalog.exe
    • ArcGlobe.exe
    • ArcScene.exe
  2. Right-click FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION, and click New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  3. Name the key as indicated in step 4, for example ArcMap.exe.
  4. Right-click the key, and click Modify.
  5. Modify the key Value data to 2af9, and click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 4 through 8 for each of the remaining three executables.
Note:
Delete your browsing history in Internet Options to clear Google credentials used with ArcMap.
