Error: Parts of features disappear in ArcGIS when zooming in

Error Message

Viewing a feature class in ArcGIS (and other ArcSDE clients) at full extent works, but when zooming in, some features or parts of features disappear.
This happens when the feature class is an Oracle Spatial table with an r-tree spatial index.

The zooming operation involves a spatial query to find all features within a rectangle. In this case, when the spatial query is executed, incomplete results are returned from the Oracle database. This happens because three- and four-dimensional r-tree spatial indexes do not work properly in Oracle Spatial 8.1.7 and earlier. This problem should be fixed with Oracle 9i.

By default, creating an r-tree spatial index on an Oracle Spatial table produces an N-dimensional index, where N is the number of dimensions in the feature class (two, three, or four) as specified in the Oracle Spatial metadata view USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA.

Solution or Workaround

Create a two-dimensional r-tree spatial index (with Oracle 8.1.7) or a quad-tree spatial index on the Oracle Spatial table. See the 'Oracle Spatial Users Guide and Reference' for instructions.
