Vector and Raster Methods for Creating Coastal Vignettes
One way cartographers represent the land-water interface on a map is by using coastal vignettes that symbolize the water from the shoreline towards open water. This can be achieved using lines parallel to the shoreline, random dots in a stipple pattern, or the gradation of color. This paper shows two different methods for creating coastal vignettes based on gradation in color: buffers for a vector approach and Euclidean distance for a raster approach.
