ArcGIS Places follows a version-based product life cycle, and releases are categorized into major, minor, or patch versions. Whenever a new major version is released, Places moves on to the next phase. To illustrate, a change in the URL from https://placesapi.arcgis.com/arcgis/rest/services/places-service/v1 to https://places-api.arcgis.com/arcgis/rest/services/places-service/v2/ is considered to be a major version change, and Esri would only make this type of change when breaking changes or significant updates require users to update their client code to access or opt into the changes.
Esri releases new patch versions (e.g., 1.2.X) every few weeks and new minor versions (e.g., 1.X) roughly every quarter. ArcGIS Places only has one active major version at a time. Therefore, users are automatically on the latest version (e.g., v1.0) without needing to change their client code.
