Installing the Service Pack
Since this Service Pack replaces several ArcSDE 8.1.2 files, ArcSDE 8.1.2 must be installed before you can install this Service Pack. It is strongly recommended that you back up your database including all previous ArcSDE system tables and user layer data before upgrading your ArcSDE installation. Install this patch using your SDE user account.
- Download the appropriate tar file to a location other than $SDEHOME:
DB2 IBM (coming soon) 6 MB Informix sde812_sp1_inf_hp.tar 6 MB sde812_sp1_inf_ibm.tar 6 MB sde812_sp1_inf_slrs.tar 5 MB Oracle 8i sde812_sp1_ora8i_hp.tar 9 MB sde812_sp1_ora8i_ibm.tar 9 MB sde812_sp1_ora8i_slrs.tar 8 MB sde812_sp1_ora8i_tru64.tar 15 MB - Stop your current ArcSDE service.
% sdemon -o shutdown
- Extract the specified tar file by typing:
% tar -xvf sde812_sp1_<Database>_<Platform>.tar
- Start the installation by typing:
% ./apply_sp
This will start the dialog for the menu-driven installation procedure. Default selections are noted in parentheses ( ). To quit the installation procedure, type 'q' at any time.
- Before upgrading your Oracle8i instance, you must grant the following additional permissions to the SDE user in Oracle:
- ALTER ANY INDEX
ALTER ANY TABLE
ANALYZE ANY
CREATE ANY INDEX
CREATE ANY PROCEDURE
CREATE ANY SEQUENCE
CREATE ANY TRIGGER
CREATE ANY VIEW
CREATE SESSION
DROP ANY INDEX
DROP ANY VIEW
DROP ANY PROCEDURE
DROP ANY SEQUENCE
EXECUTE ANY PROCEDURE
SELECT ANY SEQUENCE
SELECT ANY TABLE
UNLIMITED TABLESPACE
After the upgrade completes, you may revoke the following permissions from the SDE user account:
- ALTER ANY INDEX
ALTER ANY TABLE
ANALYZE ANY
CREATE ANY INDEX
CREATE ANY TRIGGER
CREATE ANY VIEW
DROP ANY INDEX
DROP ANY VIEW
DROP ANY PROCEDURE
DROP ANY SEQUENCE
EXECUTE ANY PROCEDURE
SELECT ANY SEQUENCE
- ALTER ANY INDEX
- To upgrade, run the updated version of sdesetup<dbms>. Failure to do so will cause problems in starting the service or with connecting to the service. Using Oracle 8i as an example:
% sdesetupora8i -o upgrade
- Start your service again.
% sdemon -o start
- If you use Direct Connect, please follow the steps below to install this patch to your ArcGIS 8.1.2 Workstation installation directory under $ARCHOME/lib, or ArcIMS 3.1 installation directory under $AIMSHOME/lib or ArcView GIS 3.3 with DBA 2.1c under $AVHOME/lib:
- Before you start, make sure you have write access to the (ArcGIS, ArcIMS or ArcView GIS) installation directory then download the appropriate compressed tar file to that location:
Oracle 8i sde812_sp1_dc_ora8i_hp.tar.Z 3 MB sde812_sp1_dc_ora8i_ibm.tar.Z 4 MB sde812_sp1_dc_ora8i_slrs.tar.Z 2 MB sde812_sp1_dc_ora8i_tru64.tar.Z 6 MB ArcIMS only, stop the ArcIMS Tasker, ArcIMS Monitor, ArcIMS Application Server (in that order).
Install the patched files, at the UNIX prompt type:
%cd <installation_directory> (i.e. cd $ARCHOME)
%uncompress sde812_sp1_dc_ora8i_<platform>.tar.Z
%tar xvf sde812_sp1_dc_ora8i_<platform>.tarArcIMS only, restart ArcIMS Application Server, ArcIMS Monitor and ArcIMS Tasker (in that order).
- Before you start, make sure you have write access to the (ArcGIS, ArcIMS or ArcView GIS) installation directory then download the appropriate compressed tar file to that location:
- Make sure you have write access to %SDEHOME%, that no one is using ArcSDE, and that the ArcSDE service is down.
- Download the appropriate files to a location other than %SDEHOME%:
DB2 (coming soon) 2 MB Informix sde812_sp1_inf.exe 2 MB Oracle 8i sde812_sp1_ora8i.exe 2 MB SQL Server sde812_sp1_sql.exe 2 MB - Double-click the sde812_sp1_<Database>.exe to start the install process.
- When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.
- As the SDE user, run the following command to restart the ArcSDE service:
C:\> sdemon -o start
- If you use Direct Connect, please follow the steps below to install this Service Pack to your ArcGIS 8.1.2, ArcIMS 3.1, or ArcView GIS 3.3 with DBA 2.1c installation folder:

Identifying QFE files on your machine
- UNIX
Any modified UNIX executables (or libraries) being sent out as part of a Quick Fix will return the unique identification number for that fix when checked with the "what" command. The identification string for this Service Pack is:
ESRI QFE-ArcSDE-812-13-CQ00166931 (5/24/2002)
Windows
To check for the presence of Quick Fixes, examine the unique identification information by a (right click, properties, version tab) action under Explorer. With only a few exceptions, all files modified as part of a QFE distribution can be uniquely identified in this manner. Under Windows 2000, select 'Product Version' under the 'Item name' column to see the unique identifier.
Patch Updates
Added Direct Connect download files (11/08/02).
