Installing this Service Pack on Windows
Installation Notes
It is important to keep all versions of ArcGIS products installed on the same machine in sync to avoid any software conflicts.
To find out what products are currently installed on your machine, download the ServicePackFinder92.exe utility and run it from your local machine. This utility provides a report detailing which ArcGIS products are currently installed on your machine. This will help determine which product Service Packs you should install on your machine. The report also details which service packs have been installed. The report is displayed when the utility is run and a servicepack.txt log file is created in your temp folder. The Service Pack Finder utility searches for the following ArcGIS products.ArcGIS ArcReader
- ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) Includes the ArcReader fixes for the ArcReader FEATURE.
- ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit for the Microsoft .NET Framework, VB6, VBA and Visual C++
- ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit for C++, the Java Platform, the Microsoft .NET Framework, VB6 and Visual C++
- ArcGIS Engine Runtime
- ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework
- ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform
- ArcGIS Server Web ADF Runtime for the Microsoft .NET Framework
- ArcIMS
- ArcIMS Web ADF for the Microsoft .NET Framework
- ArcIMS Web ADF for the Java Platform
- ArcSDE
NOTE (ArcIMS and ArcSDE users): If you use ArcIMS 9.2 or ArcSDE 9.2, you must also install ArcIMS 9.2 Service Pack 5 or ArcSDE 9.2 Service Pack 5 . For example, if you use ArcIMS 9.2 and ArcGIS 9.2 Desktop, install both ArcIMS 9.2 Service Pack 5 and ArcGIS 9.2 Desktop Service Pack 5. Since ArcIMS 9.2, ArcSDE 9.2 and the ArcGIS 9.2 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.
NOTE (ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 users): The ArcGIS Desktop Help updates setup (ArcGISDesktopHelp92sp5.msp) includes updates for ArcGIS 9.2 Desktop Documentation, including Help files, core extension Help files, geoprocessing tool Help files, tutorials, tutorial videos, and an updated "What's new in ArcGIS 9.2?" pdf. The ArcGIS Desktop setup (ArcGISDesktop92sp5.msp) must be applied before the ArcGIS Desktop Help update.
NOTE (ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 Evaluation Edition users): This Service Pack is supported with the ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 Evaluation Edition.
NOTE (ArcGIS Server Post Install): The ArcGIS Server Post Install will automatically launch after the service pack has been applied. If this doesn't happen, please be sure to launch the GIS Server Post Install and Web Applications Post Install (if ArcGIS Server .NET is installed) manually from the shortcuts found in your Start menu. The GIS Server Post Install will prompt for the ArcGIS Server Object Manager (SOM), ArcGIS Server Object Container (SOC), the GIS Server Manager (on ArcGIS Server Java) and the GIS Server Webservices (on ArcGIS Server .NET) user accounts and their associated passwords. To avoid disrupting the operation of your server installation you will need to use the exact same accounts and passwords that you used when you initially installed ArcGIS Server (or the last time you ran the Post Install). If you don't remember which ones you used you can have the Post Install create new ones for you, but you will need to update the permissions on your data and non-default output server directories to grant access to the new ArcGIS Server Object Container (SOC) account. Additionally, if you previously had large caches associated with cached Map or Globe services it may take a very long time for the Server Post Install to alter the permissions on the large number of files in your caches (see Technical Article 32766 for a suggested workaround). For help on getting started after installing ArcGIS Server, refer to the Administering the server--> Getting started after install topic in ArcGIS Server Help. You can access the ArcGIS Server Help online at http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisserver/9.2.
NOTE (ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .Net Framework users):
The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .Net Framework setup has a Service Pack 5 setup named ArcGISServerDotNet92sp5.msp.
The 9.2 release also includes a setup for the Web Application Developer Framework (ADF) Runtime. This Runtime installation is installed on production machines where you plan to deploy Web Mapping Applications built with the Manager or the Web ADF. The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .Net Framework Web ADF Runtime setup has a Service Pack 5 setup named ArcGISServerWebADFRuntime92sp5.msp.
- Note: A machine that has the ArcGISServerDotNet92sp5.msp installed would not require an installation of the ArcGISServerWebADFRuntime92sp5.msp.
Installation Steps
ArcGIS 9.2 must be installed before you can install this Service Pack. This Service Pack is cumulative and contains the fixes from all previous 9.2 patches and service packs. If you have a previous patch or service pack installed, you may apply this Service Pack over it to update the required files.

msiexec.exe /p [location of service pack]\<Product>92sp5.msp
- When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.
- Repeat steps 2 - 6 for each product installed on your machine.
NOTE: If you have installed client setups from a shared Network Administrative ArcGIS Desktop setup, this Service Pack must be applied to all client installations.
NOTE: You will not be able to install this Service Pack directly from any removable media, you must copy the Service Pack Install file (MSP) locally or to a location on your network prior to installing the Service Pack.
System Administrators note:
A technical paper is available to provide information on deploying ArcGIS and Service Packs. This white paper discusses the deployment of ArcGIS 9.2 setups and Service Packs using Microsoft® Systems Management Server (SMS) and Group Policy, including additional system requirements, suggestions, known issues, and Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) command line parameters. Deployment in a lockdown environment is also covered.
