ArcGIS 10.0 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Geodatabase Replication Upgrade Patch

Published: July 1, 2010

Summary

This is a mandatory patch and should be applied to all ArcGIS 10 clients (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Engine, ArcGIS Server) before synchronizing or creating replicas in the upgraded database.

Description

ESRI® announces the ArcGIS 10.0 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Geodatabase Replication Upgrade Patch. This patch addresses issues encountered with replicas in ArcSDE version 10 geodatabases where the replica existed prior to upgrading to version 10. It deals specifically with the issues listed below under Issues Addressed with this Patch.

Issues Addressed with this Patch

  • NIM058231 - Upgrading pre-10 geodatabases with replicas to version 10 causes the synchronization process to fail.

Description: The following information describes behavior you may encounter due to this issue. The behaviors are further described in technical article 37896.
  1. Synchronizing pre-existing replicas from earlier releases returns the following error: 'Version not found'.
  2. Synchronizing pre-existing replicas from earlier releases succeed and apply changes incorrectly, potentially corrupting data.
  3. Creating new replicas returns the following error: 'Version already exists'.
  4. Creating new replicas succeed but synchronization eventually starts failing with 'Version already exists'.

Installing this Patch on Windows

ArcGIS 10.0 must be installed before you can install this patch. Install the patch on all client machines connecting to the ArcSDE geodatabase. Use one of the ArcGIS clients (Desktop, Engine, Server) to upgrade your ArcSDE geodatabases as described below.

To Install:

  1. Make sure you have write access to your ArcGIS installation location, and that no one is using ArcGIS.
  2. Download the appropriate ArcGIS file to a location other than your ArcGIS installation location.

    ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView)
    ArcGIS-DT-10-GDB-RepUpgrade-Patch.msp 2 MB
    ArcGIS Engine Runtime
    ArcGIS-E-10-GDB-RepUpgrade-Patch.msp 2 MB
    ArcGIS Server - GIS Service
    ArcGIS-SGIS-10-GDB-RepUpgrade-Patch.msp 2 MB
ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform
    ArcGIS-SJ-10-GDB-RepUpgrade-Patch.msp 2 MB
  3. (ArcGIS Server - GIS Service Installation Only): From your Services control panel, stop the ArcGIS Server Object Manager and ArcGIS SOC Monitor services.
  4. (ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform Installation Only): From your Services control panel, stop the ArcGIS Server Manager Service, ArcGIS Server Object Manager and ArcGIS SOC Monitor services.
  5. Double-click ArcGIS-<Product>-10-GDB-RepUpgrade-Patch.msp to start the install process.
  6. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.
  7. (ArcGIS Server - GIS Service Installation Only): Complete the GIS Server Post Install that automatically launches after the update has been applied.
  8. (ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform Installation Only): Using the shortcut found in your start menu, manually launch and complete the GIS Server Post Install.
  9. Upgrade the ArcSDE Geodatabase.

Installation Notes:

  • When you install the upgrade patch, adjustments are made to the geodatabase such that you will no longer encounter the issues described above. Once the patch upgrade is applied, any client with or without the patch can use replication with the geodatabase. The patch upgrade is a one-time operation (the Upgrade Geodatabase button in geodatabase properties in Catalog will become disabled after the patch upgrade).
  • If you have installed client setups from a shared Network Administrative ArcGIS Desktop setup, this patch must be applied to all client installations.
  • System Administrators - A technical paper is available that discusses the enterprise deployment of ArcGIS 10 setups using Microsoft® Systems Management Server (SMS) and Group Policy, including additional system requirements, suggestions, known issues, and Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) command line parameters. Deployment in a lockdown environment is also covered. ArcGIS 10 Enterprise Deployment.
