Why is the raster attribute table lost after loading the raster to a geodatabase?

In ArcSDE 8.1, the server does not store any attribute table information for the raster. If a grid or other raster dataset with an attribute table is loaded into a geodatabase, the attribute table will be lost.

It is not possible to join a table to a raster dataset and have it persisted. Further support of attributes of raster data will be addressed in a future release.
