Why does the GeoProcessing wizard's Merge tool omit attribute values in some fields?

Answer

The Merge tool creates a new shapefile with a list of fields based on one of the input layers. If a merge layer does not contain all the fields present in the base layer, the records added to the new shapefile from that layer will not contain data for those fields.
