Frequently asked question

Why are TINs not displayed correctly with the ArcScene renderer 'Face elevation with graduated color ramp'?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

A triangulated irregular network (TIN) that is a face symbolized with elevation zones does not display properly with the 'Face elevation with graduated color ramp' symbology because it is interpreted by OpenGL as multiple polygons.

If there is a triangle face that has three classes of elevation that pass through it, the renderer and video card actually sees this as three polygons for the single face.

This is the reason why the default renderer was changed in ArcGIS Desktop 9.0 to the 'Faces with same symbol' renderer because this option allows more TINs to be rendered when they are first added to a scene.
