Why are newly created join by location layers (Spatial Join) added with visibility turned on?

Answer

Join by location ignores the new layer visibility setting in the Tools > Options > Application dialog box. When you perform a spatial join, the new layer appears in ArcMap with visibility turned on regardless of the setting.
