Where is [filename].sid?

Error Message

When adding a MrSid image as an image theme to a view, the following error message displays:

"Where is [filename].sid".

When the above error message is dismissed, the following error message displays:

"Error in image source [filename].sid. Unable to make theme".

Cause

When MrSid images are added to a View as an image theme, a temporary BIP image is created in the system's TEMP directory. If the contents of the TEMP directory are too large (> 100 MB), ArcView may have trouble creating the temporary BIP file.

This error can also occur if the TEMP environment variable is set to a folder, which is not 8.3 compliant. For example, 'TEMP = c:\documents and settings\users\local settings\temp' will evoke the problem.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Clean out the TEMP directory
    1. Determine the location of the system TEMP directory.
      1. Make a View active in ArcView.
      2. Select Add Theme from the View Menu.
      3. In the Add Theme dialog box type "$TEMP" in the Directory field.
      4. Click OK.
        The location of your TEMP folder will appear in the Directory field.
    2. Navigate to the TEMP directory in Windows Explorer.
    3. Delete un-needed files or move important files to another directory.
  2. Change the TEMP environment variable to an 8.3 compliant directory.
