Verify ArcGIS Business Analyst Desktop is installed and working properly

Summary

This test is a good starting point for a wide range of issues. For example, if unsure the install went well, or if errors are experienced when running analysis, this test helps ensure that you are starting with a stable copy of Business Analyst (BA).

If issues are encountered with analysis resulting in an error message, it is recommended to run this test first.

Though seemingly simple, the test can help verify the following:

  • Copies of ArcMap and BA are compatible
  • BA is successfully accessing its data
  • The software is licensed, and that the data license is activated
  • The correct extension is turned on
  • Network Analyst is accessible
  • The designated output folder has write permissions

Procedure

  1. Open Business Analyst from Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > Business Analyst > Business Analyst 201x.
  2. Once open, turn on the Business Analyst toolbar if necessary.
  3. From the Business Analyst toolbar, click the Click on the Map tool (red and white circle with a white arrow).

  1. Right-click anywhere on the map and choose Find Point By Address.  Enter an address for which you are licensed, for example, a US address, and click Next
  2. Define the prospecting area as a Drive Time, and click Next.
  3. Leave the default drive time values and click Next.
  4. Check the box to Create Reports and click Next.
  5. Leave the default of For Individual Features. and click Next.
  6. Select the Market Profile under the Demographics category and click Next.
  7. Leave the option to View reports on screen, and click Finish.

If Business Analyst is installed and working properly, the steps above result in a drive time layer and a Market Profile.
