HOW TO

Update a term license in an sde geodatabase

Last Published: October 6, 2020

Summary

Term licenses such as Education Site Licenses, Esri Developer Network (EDN) licenses, and other ArcGIS product licenses such as ArcGIS Server, are valid for a specific period of time.

Geodatabases authorized with an ArcGIS Server term license must be updated with a new authorization file when the existing one expires. Instructions provided describe the steps to update these licenses.

Procedure

Beginning in ArcGIS 10.1, a message is returned when connecting to an sde geodatabase that contains an expired license.
To update the license, do the following:

  1. Connect directly to the geodatabase as the geodatabase administrator.
    • In most geodatabases, this is the sde user. In dbo-schema geodatabases in SQL Server, it is a login that is dbo in the database.
    • For user-schema geodatabases in Oracle, update the license key in the sde geodatabase, and connect as the schema owner and update the key in the user-schema geodatabase.
  2. Specify a valid ArcGIS Server keycodes file in the Update ArcGIS Server License dialog box, and click OK to authorize.
