"Error opening notebook. Unable to establish Docker Client environment"

Error Message

After applying system updates (including Docker updates), customers may receive the following error message when attempting to open notebooks in ArcGIS Notebook Server 10.9.1: "Error opening notebook. Unable to establish Docker Client environment"

Cause

This issue is caused by an incompatibility between ArcGIS Notebook Server 10.9.1 and Docker versions 25.0.0 and higher.

At version 25.0.0, Docker removed the VirtualSize field from the /images/json endpoint. ArcGIS Notebook Server 10.9.1 uses this field when requesting container images from Docker.

Therefore, the highest supported version of Docker for ArcGIS Notebook Server 10.9.1 at this point in time (May 2024) is 24.0.9.

Solution or Workaround

• Upgrade to ArcGIS Notebook Server 11.0 or later, or
• Do not upgrade Docker past 24.0.9 due to the removal of the VirtualSize field (if upgrading to 11.0 is not possible
