PROBLEM

Unable to add a layer package hosted on ArcGIS Online to a web map

Last Published: January 2, 2026

Description

A layer package (.lpkx) was published from ArcGIS Pro to ArcGIS Online. When attempting to add the layer package to a web map, it does not appear in the My Content list and cannot be added directly to the map.

Cause

Layer packages are not supported for direct use in web maps on ArcGIS Online. They are designed for storage and sharing, not for visualization in web maps. To use the data in a web map, the layer package must first be published as a hosted web layer from ArcGIS Pro or extracted and republished in a supported format.

Solution or Workaround

There are two possible solutions to this issue:

I. Publish the layer as a web layer from ArcGIS Pro

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the Catalog pane.
  2. Right-click the layer from the layer package.
  3. Go to Sharing > Share As Web Layer.
  4. In the Share As Web Layer pane:
    • Provide a name for the web layer.
    • Select the appropriate Layer Type.
    • Choose the Sharing level.
  5. Click Publish.

Once published, the layer appears in ArcGIS Online Content and can be added directly to a web map.

II. Export and upload the data manually

  1. Open the layer package in ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Right-click the layer and choose Data > Export Features.
  3. Set the Input Features, Output Location, and Output Name.
  4. Click OK to export.
  5. Zip the exported shapefile components into a .zip file.
  6. In ArcGIS Online, go to Content > New Item > Your device.
  7. Upload the .zip file.
  8. Fill in the item details and click Save and Publish.

You now have a hosted feature layer in your content, ready to be used in web maps.
