ERROR

There was an error trying to print the web map

Last Published: April 26, 2020

Error Message

Printing a publicly shared web map in ArcGIS Online via the print function displays a blank browser window, and the following error message is returned:

"There was an error trying to print the web map."

Cause

A layer included in the web map on ArcGIS Online includes a hosted feature service that is only accessible on an internal network. This service is unable to communicate with the ArcGIS Online default printing geoprocessing service when the ArcGIS Online web map print function is executed.

Solution or Workaround

  • Option A: Make the hosted feature service accessible via a public URL

Follow the instructions outlined in the Esri blog: How to create a hosted feature service

  • Option B: Configure ArcGIS Online for Organizations to use the ArcGIS Server print service

    1. Log in to ArcGIS Online for Organizations using administrator credentials.

    2. Navigate to My Organization > Edit Settings > Utility Services.

    3. Launch a new tab on the web browser, and browse to the REST endpoint of the ArcGIS Server.

    Default URL:
    http://<domain>:6080/arcgis/rest/services

    4. Click the Utilities folder > PrintingTools > Export Web Map Task.
    [O-Image]
    Default URL:
    <domain>/arcgis/rest/services/Utilities/PrintingTools/GPServer/Export%20Web%20Map%20Task

    5. Copy the URL, and paste it in the Printing section of the ArcGIS Online for Organizations Utility Services page to configure the print service.

    6. Save the settings.
