Error Message

This error may occur when trying to use the Inverse command or the Traverse tool to populate the COGO fields for a line feature class.

"Inverse: An unexpected failure occurred. The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data."

The COGO fields will not be updated.

Cause

This is due to one or more of the COGO fields not being wide enough for the value attempting to be stored.

Solution or Workaround

Select an option below:

  • Check the width of the COGO fields in the line feature class. They should be at least;
    Distance - 10
    Direction - 12
  • Check the number of decimal places used for angles. If the direction units are degrees minutes and seconds (DMS), use zero decimal places.
