Attempts to edit or modify the geometry of features of a map document in ArcMap returns the following error.
Error: The feature’s geometry could not be modified. Incorrect parameters used to define a spatial reference’s domain extent and resolution.
This error may be caused by DWG files in the map document (MXD). The DWG file format is the native file format for CAD packages, such as DraftSight, AutoCAD, and IntelliCAD.
CAD layers with very large or very small spatial extents (ex: scale of 1:10000000) may cause this error, as the domain resolution of the MXD is affected by the large spatial extent defined in the CAD layers. The domain resolution of the MXD is unable to accommodate the defined spatial extent scale of the CAD layers.
Ensure the CAD data are defined with a spatial extent scale that is within the boundaries of the MXD domain resolution before importing the data into ArcMap. Additionally, ensure that the projections defined for the CAD drawings or layers are similar to the projection of the desired destination MXD.
If the CAD layers are already in the MXD, remove each CAD layer systematically to identify the problematic CAD layers. Once the problematic CAD layers are identified, remove them from the MXD and proceed with modifying the geometry of the desired features. Upon completion, redefine the projections and spatial extent scales before re-importing into the desired MXD.
