Starting ArcMap causes Windows display properties to be reset to 8-bit color

Description

Starting ArcMap causes the Windows display properties to reset from 32-bit to 8-bit color. No other ArcGIS Desktop applications, such as ArcCatalog, cause this problem. When ArcMap is closed, the color is reset back to 32-bit color.

Cause

The total file size of the user profile exceeds 1GB.

Solution or Workaround

Delete all unnecessary files from the user profile, move files not necessarily needing to be stored in the user profile, or create a new user profile.
