HOW TO

Set up Windows NT ArcInfo to access a license from a central NT license server

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Procedure

This document shows how to set up ArcInfo for Windows NT to access a license from a central Windows NT license server.

Answer:

1) Create an environment variable on the client to designate the location of the license server.

2) On the client workstation, go to Start--> Settings--> Control Panel--> System Environment. For ARC/INFO 7.1.X, enter the following in the variable field:

LM_LICENSE_FILE

For ARC/INFO 7.2.1, enter the following in the variable field:

ESRI_LICENSE_FILE

3) For all versions of ARC/INFO, enter the following in the value field:

PORT@HOST

Where, PORT is the number listed on the first line (right hand corner) of the
C:\arcexe72\sysgen\license.dat file. In the example below, the port is 27005.

SERVER babylon ESRI_SENTINEL_KEY=37100548 TCP:27005

And, HOST is the hostname of the FLEXlm license server. HOST can also be
replaced by the computer's IP address.

For this example, the variable field would read:

27005@babylon

4) Set and apply these edits.

Notes:

If the license server obtains an IP address from a DHCP server, use the license server's hostname instead of the IP address. To check if the workstation is
using the DHCP service, go into Start--> Settings--> Control Panel--> Network Protocols. Double click on TCP/IP Protocols. Below Adapters there are two radio buttons, the radio button "Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server" will be filled in if you are using the DHCP service.
