Remote desktop logins are slow when running ArcGIS Server with Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, and 2016

Description

Remote desktop logins take much longer than usual when ArcGIS Server is running on Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, or 2016. The login period can take anywhere from half a minute to several minutes long.

Cause

ArcGIS Server runs many processes as a service (ArcSOCs), and these processes trigger a defect in Microsoft Windows 2012, 2012 R2, or 2016.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the operating system, install the following security update from the Microsoft Support website:

• Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2: August 8, 2017 – KB4034681
• Windows Server 2016: September 28, 2017 – KB4038801
