Registering a table with an enterprise geodatabase fails with Error: 999999: Something unexpected caused the tool to fail

Error Message

When registering a table stored in a SQL Server Enterprise Geodatabase version 10.9.1 with the geodatabase using ArcGIS Pro 3.2 the process fails with the following error:

999999: Something unexpected caused the tool to fail. Contact Esri Technical Support (http://esriurl.com/support) to Report a Bug, and refer to the error help for potential solutions or workarounds.

Cause

The dataset contains fields of type Big Integer.

11.2.0 is the minimum enterprise geodatabase version to support 64-bit object IDsbig integers, date only, time only, and timestamp with offset data types. These data types are not supported by earlier geodatabase versions. See: Client and geodatabase compatibility

Solution or Workaround

There are two ways to resolve the error:
  • Re-create the data using integers instead of big integers before registering the the data with the enterprise geodatabase.
  • Upgrade the Enterprise Geodatabase to 11.2 or newer.
