PROBLEM

When creating a map template in ArcGIS Field Maps Designer, a warning is returned: "This layer will not be converted into a template, and it will reference the original source"

Last Published: March 17, 2026

Description

When creating a map template in ArcGIS Field Maps Designer, layers from multilayer feature services (services containing sublayers) are not converted into new hosted layers. Instead, the following warning appears:

This layer will not be converted into a template, and it will reference the original source.

As a result, the map template references the original feature service rather than generating a new hosted layer for each sublayer.

Additional Information:

  • The issue does not occur when using a single-layer hosted feature service created exclusively in ArcGIS Online.
  • The behavior is consistently reproducible with feature services containing sublayers, regardless of whether they were published from ArcGIS Pro or directly in ArcGIS Online.

Cause

This is a known limitation of the ArcGIS Field Maps Designer API. The tool does not currently support converting multilayer feature services (with sublayers) into new hosted layers when creating a map template.

Solution or Workaround

Publish each sublayer as an individual hosted feature layer before creating the map template.
