Editing SDE annotation via graphics display causes annotation to disappear. The data itself is still in the table, but can not be re-displayed.

Cause

Editing an SDE annotation field by changing values in the text field results in corruption of the annotation graphic display.

Editing SDE annotation in this manner is not supported in any version of ArcView GIS.

Solution or Workaround

ArcInfo workstation can be used to make edits to the annotation.

Export the annotation layer to a coverage, edit the coverage, then re-import to post the changes made on the coverage to ArcSDE.
(this requires ArcPlot.)
