PROBLEM

Upgrading a highly available ArcGIS Data Store fails for the standby ArcGIS Data Store

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When upgrading a highly available ArcGIS Data Store from version 10.6 to 10.6.1, the upgrade fails for the standby ArcGIS Data Store.

Note:
When upgrading a highly available relational or tile cache data store, the new version of ArcGIS Data Store must be installed on the primary and standby machines. Once the installation process is completed, both machines can then be configured by running the Data Store Configuration wizard or configuredatastore utility from the primary machine. This configures both the primary and standby machines.

Cause

As stated in ArcGIS Help: Upgrade ArcGIS Data Store, the order in which a data store is upgraded does not affect the upgrade process. However, the order of upgrading each machine for a highly available data store can cause the upgrade process to fail.

Solution or Workaround

The following workaround involves uninstalling and reinstalling ArcGIS Data Store on the standby machine.

  1. Remove the standby data store. This can be done via the primary data store by using the removemachine syntax. For steps on how to use the syntax, refer to ArcGIS Help: removemachine.
  2. Uninstall ArcGIS Data Store from the standby machine.
  3. Navigate to the following folder location on the standby machine and remove the folder named DataStore:
    C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\
  4. Navigate to C:\ drive of the standby machine, and remove the folder named arcgisdatastore.
  5. Reinstall ArcGIS Data Store on the standby machine.
  6. Configure ArcGIS Data Store to work with ArcGIS for Server. For more information about the configuration process, refer to ArcGIS Help: Create a data store.
  7. Once the configuration process is completed, validate both the primary and standby data store. To do so, refer to ArcGIS Help: Validate the data store.
