PROBLEM

Unable to upload images within size requirement to ArcGIS StoryMaps

Last Published: April 28, 2025

Description

When uploading an image to ArcGIS StoryMaps, although the size meets the requirement and other project uploads were successful, the upload fails and returns the following error message:

Error:
Images must be smaller than 10 MB and 5000 pixels
The error message in ArcGIS StoryMaps

Cause

In the ArcGIS StoryMaps January 2023 release, the maximum allowed height and width for uploaded images was set to 6,000 pixels. However, after the August 2024 update, the image size requirement changed from 6,000 to 5,000 pixels to improve performance, ensure faster loading times, and enhance compatibility across devices.

Solution or Workaround

Upload an image with a maximum width and height of 5,000 pixels. If the image has been previously used, resize the image using an image editor to 5,000 pixels on its longest dimension before uploading. When resizing, avoid compression to prevent image quality degradation.
