Unable to save a web map in ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS

Description

The following issues with saving occur in Map Viewer Classic and Map Viewer.

• In Map Viewer Classic, when editing a web map, the Save button is unavailable in ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS.

• In Map Viewer, when editing an existing web map, the Save button is available, but clicking it returns the following error message:

Error:   
Unable to add layer <layer name>. Unable to add layer

• In Map Viewer, when attempting to save a new web map, the Save button is disabled.

Cause

Known causes of the issue include:

• The organization member’s default role or custom role has insufficient privileges to create content in ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS.
• The browser cache on the machine is not cleared.

Solution or Workaround

Use one of the following options to resolve this issue.

Update the member’s default role or custom role to enable the privilege to create content

Note:
Only an organization's administrator can perform the following workflows.

• Change the member’s role to a default role such as User, Publisher, or Administrator, with the privilege to create content. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Change member roles or Portal for ArcGIS: Change member roles for more information.
• Update the member’s custom role to enable the Create, update, and delete option in the General privileges settings. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Configure member roles or Portal for ArcGIS: Configure member roles for more information.

Clear the web browser cache

Clear the browsing history and cache on the machine to ensure a smoother performance of the browser.

Note:
It is sometimes necessary to use the incognito tab or other browsers to save the web map in Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic.
