Unable to open Python IDLE or edit script tools from ArcToolbox

Description

When right-clicking a script tool and selecting "Edit" or attempting to open Python IDLE from the Windows Start menu, nothing happens.

Cause

This is a known issue with Python 2.5.1 on Windows.

Solution or Workaround

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the user's profile directory.
   
   To see hidden files in XP:
   
   1. Under Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
   2. Click View.
   3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
   
   To see hidden files in Vista/Win7:
   
   1. Open Folder Options by clicking Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Folder Options.
   2. Click View.
   3. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
   
   
2. Right-click the ".idlerc" folder and select Properties. Uncheck the "Hidden" attribute if it's active and apply the new settings.
   
   
3. Test the change by editing a script tool or opening Python IDLE again.
