Unable to open an AIX file exported from ArcGIS Pro in Adobe Illustrator

Description

An Adobe Illustrator Exchange (AIX) file exported from ArcGIS Pro using the ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud extension cannot be opened in Adobe Illustrator.

Cause

The exported file contains unsupported or incompatible symbology, data, or extension configurations that cannot be properly translated into an AIX file format. The following scenarios may cause the AIX file to fail when opened in Adobe Illustrator:

• The map contains a dashed template for line symbols with more than 8 digits. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: List of symbol effects for more information.
• The map contains a stroke symbol layer with 'Picture stroke' as the stroke type. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Stroke symbol layers for more information.
• The map contains grouped symbol classes. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Unique values for more information.
• The exported map contains a DWG file. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: CAD data as ArcGIS Pro layers for more information.
• The ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud extension was installed from Adobe Exchange.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, the workarounds provided are applicable.

• Change the dashed template for the line symbol with less than 8 digits in ArcGIS Pro. For example, use 6 3 3 3. Refer to How To: Create a custom linetype with text characters in ArcGIS Pro for instructions.
• Change the stroke symbol layer to ‘Solid stroke’ in ArcGIS Pro. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Modify symbols for more information.
• Ungroup the grouped data's symbol classes in ArcGIS Pro. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Group values for instructions.
• Remove any DWG file contained in the project before exporting it. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Remove or delete project items for instructions.
• Install the ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud extension from MyEsri. Download the ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud extension from ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud Downloads.
• Upgrade the version of Adobe Illustrator and the ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud extension. Refer to Esri Community: Keeping ArcGIS Maps for Adobe CC up to date for instructions.
