Unable to export datasets using the Export XML Workspace Document in ArcGIS Pro

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, attempts to export datasets using the Export XML Workspace Document tool fail and return the error below.

Error:
ERROR 160666: No datasets found to export.

This article provides two workarounds.

Cause

The tool is running on an empty file geodatabase. The Export XML Workspace Document tool requires existing data such as feature classes. Shapefiles are not supported.

Solution or Workaround

Export the feature class

1. Search and select Export XML Workspace Document (Data Management Tools) from the Geoprocessing pane. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Find a geoprocessing tool for instructions.
2. Configure the Export XML Workspace Document tool.
   1. In the Export XML Workspace Document pane, for Input Data, click Browse to search for the feature class to export. In this example, SingularFeatureClass is selected.
   2. Click Run.

Convert the shapefile to a geodatabase feature class

1. Open the ArcGIS Pro project containing the shapefile.
2. In the Catalog pane, expand Folders and subfolders, then right-click the shapefile. In this example, the shapefile is PointZvalue.shp.
3. Click Export > Feature Class(es) To Geodatabase....
4. In the Feature Class To Geodatabase pane, specify Output Geodatabase, if required. Click Run.

5. Refresh the output of the geodatabase to view the imported feature class. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Refresh a location's content for more information and instructions.
6. Search for and select Export XML Workspace Document (Data Management Tools) from the Geoprocessing pane. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Find a geoprocessing tool for instructions.
7. Configure the Export XML Workspace Document tool. 
   1. In the Export XML Workspace Document pane, for Input Data, select the geodatabase containing the imported feature class. In this example, New File Geodatabase.gdb is selected.
   2. Click Run.
