PROBLEM

Troubleshooting the distributed collaboration setup between ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS

Last Published: March 22, 2023

Description

There are a number of common issues when setting up a Portal for ArcGIS to ArcGIS Online distributed collaboration. One issue is the 'Not Yet Joined' status display in the ArcGIS Online workstation. The status in ArcGIS Online indicates Portal for ArcGIS has not joined the collaboration. It is not possible to sync content until both Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online indicate the 'Joined' collaboration status. Review the Portal for ArcGIS log records for events or errors associated with the events to gain clarification on the issue.

Below is an example of a message displayed in Portal's logs.

Collaboration invitation validation failed for Collaboration invitation validation completed. Existing collaboration with id 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' found. Invitation for this collaboration was already previously accepted. The certificate authority that issued the SSL certificate needs to be trusted by Portal before the invitation can be accepted.

To determine if Portal for ArcGIS can communicate with ArcGIS Online, use the checkUrl.jsp page. Navigate to the following URL on a web browser:

https://portal.domain.com/portal/sharing/checkUrl.jsp?url=https://www.arcgis.com

If the message described below is returned, a troubleshoot of Portal's internet connection settings is required.

{
  "success": false,
  "error": {"message": "Unknown Exception"}
}

Cause

  • The configured Portal for ArcGIS SSL certificate details do not match the ArcGIS Online certificate details.
  • There is no connection between ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS.

Solution or Workaround

Note:
The following workarounds must be performed by the organization's IT personnel.

Compare the Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Web Adaptor certificate

Ensure the certificate configured with Portal for ArcGIS matches the Portal URL used to create the collaboration.

  1. Confirm the Portal URL used to create the collaboration by navigating to ArcGIS Online > Organization > Settings > Collaborations. Select the desired collaboration under Collaboration Name, and click View Guest. The URL is listed under URL.
  2. Confirm the certificate configured with Portal.
    1. Navigate to the Portal Administrator Directory and log in.
    2. Navigate to Security > SSLCertificates.
    3. Identify the certificate listed for Web Server SSL Certificate.
    4. Click the certificate name to open the Certificate Information page. Review the certificate details.
    5. Confirm the validity of the certificate for the Portal URL used to create the collaboration.
  3. In Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, confirm the correct certificate is bound to port 433 for ArcGIS Web Adaptor and the validity of the certificate for the Portal URL used to create the collaboration.

Confirm the connection between Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online

For a collaboration to succeed, Portal for ArcGIS needs outbound access to ArcGIS Online. Determine if a connection is established between Portal and ArcGIS Online.

  1. On the Portal machine, log in as the account running the Portal Windows service.
  2. Open a web browser and confirm Portal can access ArcGIS Online.
  3. Review the ArcGIS Online certificate and confirm the certificate details match the ArcGIS Online certificate when viewed from the workstation.
