Transaction logs are retained in the walarchive folder for Portal for ArcGIS

Description

When working with Portal for ArcGIS, transaction logs are retained and accumulated in the walarchive folder located in C:\arcgisportal\backups. This may cause an unnecessary drain on the machine's resources by occupying excessive amounts of valuable disk space.

Cause

By default, incremental transaction logs are stored in the walarchive folder, which allows users to create incremental backups of the portal. Initially, the size of this subdirectory is limited to 5 GB size. Once the WebGISDR backup tool is run, the 5 GB limit is removed, and new transaction logs are generated and saved in the folder until the next time the WebGISDR backup tool is run.

Solution or Workaround

Run the WebGISDR tool to clear the transaction logs

To avoid the transaction logs from accumulating in the walarchive folder, run the WebGISDR tool using Backup mode regularly. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Create an ArcGIS Enterprise backup for more information, and steps to run the tool.
