PROBLEM

The Transparent background property is disabled when exporting a layout to PNG in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: August 24, 2024

Description

Exporting a layout to PNG with a transparent background instead of a white page allows specific parts of the image to appear transparent in a web browser. This transparency enables backgrounds, images, or colors to show through seamlessly. However, when attempting to export a layout to PNG in ArcGIS Pro, the 'Transparent background' property is disabled, as shown in the image below.

The 'Transparent background' property is disabled in the Export Layout pane

Cause

This is a known limitation. The ‘Color depth’ is set to 24-bit True Color or lower. Thus, the ‘Transparent background’ check box is disabled. This is because transparent backgrounds are only supported in 32-bit with Alpha color depth.

Solution or Workaround

Change the 'Color depth' to 32-bit with Alpha. In ArcGIS Pro, in the Export Layout pane, on the Properties tab, under PNG Settings, expand the Color depth drop-down menu and select 32-bit with Alpha.

The image below shows the 'Transparent background' property check box is now available in the Export Layout pane when attempting to export the layout to PNG in ArcGIS Pro.
